Winch overhaul for 2,200-tonne crane vessel

GBS recently carried out a challenging overhaul project for a real powerhouse: a 2,200-tonne floating sheerleg. This project was subject to a very tight deadline; the crane vessel was due to leave the port in just 3 weeks’ time. GBS, 24/7 service provider in the demanding maritime industry, pulled out all the stops to get the job done on time.

The crane vessel was temporarily docked in the port of Rotterdam for preventive maintenance. This “floating sheerleg” – with a lifting capacity of 2,200 metric tonnes – is used worldwide for salvage operations, installation of offshore platforms and other operations. With the help of the winches present on deck, masses of up to 3,000 metric tonnes can be lifted. GBS was invited to perform a visual inspection of the crane vessel's pulley blocks and winches.

The project began with the significant task of disassembling four enormous pulley blocks after years of loyal service on board the crane vessel. GBS immediately deployed 24/7 shifts to complete this task. Following disassembly, the heavy transport to GBS took place. Visual inspection of the two anchor winches and runner winch revealed various points of damage. An inspection report followed, and the client was invited to discuss the findings and the resulting advice.

A singular service provider with true 24/7 service

Already familiar with GBS’ dynamic approach, our client accepted the advice, meaning that the work could begin. The inspection showed that multiple components were in need of replacement, including the bearings, shafts and gears. Thanks to GBS’ versatile service offering, the client was able to get all of these needs fulfilled by one company, which saved a considerable amount of time. A 24-hour rolling shift service was deployed immediately, working around the clock 7 days a week. This enabled GBS to deliver the project on time and to the full satisfaction of the client. We carry out regular functional checks as required by relevant regulations (Lloyd's classification) and succesfully completed the project within 3 weeks.
